INRAe PIAF, the laboratory with which Karine Bonneval has been collaborating since 2018, has developed a non-intrusive tool that measures variations in branch dilation in real time: the Pépipiaf. Minute by minute, the tree gives us its reactions to the weather, the time of day and the season.
In a way, these measurements give us the pulse of the tree's own temporality, which is slower than that of humans. They tell us its circadian, rhythm, the way it grows and reacts to the elements. Pépipiaf also measures wind speed, soil humidity and solar radiation at tree level.
The installation aims to make these data perceptible in a permanent vibration, in opposition to the way we see trees. We think of them as stable and almost immutable, whereas they are fragile and sensitive, in constant palpitation.
In collaboration with researcher Guillaume Hutzler, Karine Bonneval's project aims to make these vibrations visible, to enter into communion with the connected tree.
Using the real-time collection of data transmitted by Pépipiaf, Karine Bonneval has created four hybrid installations based on the four elements. Each piece invites us to use it in a particular way, to position it for interaction with our bodies. The movements of pieces of paper, generated by leguinos, vary according to luminosity, wind, hygrometry and the diameter of the prunus branch connected to the IBGBI campus.

The workshop was set up in the laboratory, and provided an opportunity for exchanges and workshops with researchers and students from Evry.
