Dendromité / Berlin is immediately presented as a hybrid device. Its form evokes an organic, root-like dimension, a tentacular object, a kind of bulb from which emerge long
branches emerge. Suspended, the structure seems to float, as if able to move or expand autonomously. While its envelope, made of plant yarns of various textures, diameters and tones (linen, hemp, banana, woolly nettle) is reminiscent of the plant world, the soul of its structure is purely “technical”. Cables, electrical and computer systems, right down to the computer keyboard caught in the wire mesh, give the work this in-between character. The choice of wire knitting here indicates the intertwined nature of the piece, analogous to the notion of a network made up of intertwined, indissociable elements.
The nineteen trees chosen by Karine Bonneval gave rise to double sound recordings: concrete sounds of their urban environment (including human activities), and the artist's hand caressing the bark, sometimes with curious accents. They constitute nineteen sound tracks, which visitors activate by grasping the copper medallions stamped with the trees' “names”, sensitive and tactile endings. After sight and touch, our sense of hearing is brought into contact with these subjects, in a way that reflects the artist's very physical relationship with them during his work.
